Fake Punt Sweep is a trick run play out of the Punt formation in Special personnel, designed to catch a defense sleeping on special teams alignment. The upback or personal protector takes the direct snap and sweeps to the edge behind pulling blockers from the punt line, exploiting outside contain and edge defenders who are not aligned to defend a run fit. This is a pure run play with no pass option, and the primary read progression is patience to let the edge blocker seal the corner before turning it upfield off the pulling blocker's hip.
Watch the edge defenders on the punt return unit, if they crash hard upfield to block the punt or release into return lanes without containing the edge, this sweep will hit big. Identify whether the defense has a personal protector spy or an edge defender staying home to defend a potential fake, since that alignment shuts this play down immediately. Key the safety depth on the return unit, if both safeties are staying back deep for a return with no one reading run keys, the sweep has a clean angle to the sideline. Post-snap, track how fast the outside contain defender squeezes down, since a disciplined edge player who stays square can force the ball carrier to cut it back into traffic. If the opponent has shown fake punt awareness earlier in the game by keeping extra defenders in the box or slow-playing the snap read, expect this concept to be defended and consider holding it for a better spot.
Only call this on obvious punt downs, ideally fourth and short or fourth and medium when the defense is in a standard punt return look with no hands team discipline.
Check pre-snap for a punt return unit that is lined up soft or standing upright without their hand in the dirt, since that signals they are not anticipating a run.
Look for gunners releasing upfield immediately at the snap, which confirms the defense treats this as a real punt and opens up the sweep lane.
Mix this into your play calling sequence alongside Fake Punt Off Tackle and Fake Punt Dive so opponents cannot key on one specific fake punt run direction.
Save this for spots where your scouting or opponent tendencies show a history of relaxed alignment on punt plays, since surprise is the core of this play's success.
