Punt 2 is the standard punt formation call out of the Special Punt set, designed to flip field position rather than run a route concept or fake. The blocking scheme keeps the protection unit in standard punt protection with gunners releasing off the line to cover the kick, while the personal protector reads the rush from depth. The primary read progression belongs to the punter and gunners: the punter reads hang time and directional placement while the gunners key the return man's alignment to set up coverage lanes.
Watch for a return team that stacks the box or shows an overload look on one side, since that signals a potential fake punt block attempt against you rather than a real return. Identify whether the return man is set up for a standard fair catch alignment or a full return with wall blockers, which tells you how aggressively to cover downfield with your gunners. Look for jammers lined up directly on your gunners at the snap, since a hard double team jam can delay your coverage and open up return lanes if you do not win the release quickly. Key the depth of the safeties on the return unit, since shallow safeties often mean they are selling out to set up a return wall, giving your punter a window to place the ball to the opposite hash. Recognize when the opposing team shows a fake punt return alignment, since a lack of deep safety help suggests they may be baiting you into an actual fake, which is not what Punt 2 is designed for.
Use Punt 2 on standard fourth down and long situations when you have no intention of faking, since this is your base punt with full coverage integrity.
Check the return team's alignment before the snap. If you see a heavy return look with both gunners bracketed, consider audibling to one of the fake punt calls in this set like Fake Punt Sweep or Fake Punt Off Tackle to catch an aggressive return unit off guard.
User one of your gunners immediately after the snap to fight through the jam and get a clean release, since this directly affects your coverage lane integrity downfield.
Aim the punt away from the primary return man if you notice him cheating to one side pre-snap, forcing a fair catch or limiting return yardage.
Mix Punt 2 in with your fake punt calls like Fake Punt FB Pass or Fake Punt X Curl earlier in a franchise or game session so the CPU or opponent respects the fake, making your legitimate Punt 2 attempts more effective in high leverage spots.
