Fake Punt Dive is a trick run play out of the Punt Special formation that hands the ball off to the FB or up-back on a quick interior dive rather than executing the punt. The blocking scheme relies on the punt personnel selling protection at the snap before the interior linemen turn upfield to seal the point of attack. This is not a man or zone beater in the traditional sense, it is designed to exploit a defense that is lined up in punt-return alignment with light numbers in the box, so the primary read is simply whether the defense committed extra defenders to return duty, allowing the ball carrier to hit the gap before the defense can react.
Pre-snap, check whether the defense has any players lined up tighter to the line than a standard punt-return front, since a crashing personnel look signals they expect a fake and will blow up the dive immediately. Look for a spy or extra defender shading toward the up-back or FB alignment, which tells you the defense has scouted this exact play. Post-snap, key the interior punt-return rushers: if they stay high and read the kick instead of crashing downhill, the dive lane will be there. This play gets shut down hard by any defense running a punt-safe or fake-punt-aware call that keeps linemen low and hands-ready at the snap. Watch for a shooting linebacker or edge defender who ignores the punt fake entirely and stays home in the box, since that defender can blow up the play before the FB gets to the line of scrimmage.
Only call this when the opposing defense shows a standard punt-return look with no signs of a fake punt block scheme or safe alignment. Scout the CPU or opponent tendencies beforehand since some players always send a return unit deep, which leaves the box wide open for this dive. Snap it quickly after your pre-snap read to avoid giving user-controlled defenders time to sim-swap into a punt-block formation. Mix this call in after running Fake Punt Off Tackle or Fake Punt Sweep earlier in the game so the defense respects outside fakes and cheats their edge defenders, opening the interior lane for the dive. Best used on fourth down in your own territory when the defense is in pure punt-safe mode, or in situations where the opponent has shown no film on your fake punt tendencies.
