Fake Punt Off Tackle is a designed run play out of the Punt formation's Special personnel that catches defenses off guard by snapping directly to the upback for a hard-nosed run to the edge. The blocking scheme pulls the play-side linemen and gunners into position to seal the off tackle lane while the personal protector leads through the hole. This is a pure run play with no pass option, and the primary read is simple: follow the lead blocker through the designed gap and read the first unblocked defender to decide between bouncing outside or cutting up inside.
Watch the return team alignment before the snap, if the defense has bunched defenders near the line of scrimmage instead of setting up a standard return shell, they may be selling out to stop the fake. Key the outside contain defender on the play side, if he stays disciplined and does not crash inside, the off tackle lane will be sealed shut. Look for a safety or gunner cheating down into the box, which signals the defense has scouted this specific fake punt package and is ready to blow it up. Identify whether the defense rushes the punt, since an all-out punt block call from the defense can actually create wider running lanes if the protection holds up. If the opponent shows the same soft return look on every punt, this play has a high success rate, but if they start walking a linebacker or safety up to the line, abandon the fake and let the punt go.
Only call this on 4th down when the defense shows a standard punt return or safe look with light numbers on the line of scrimmage.
Scout the opponent pre-snap for any hint they respect the fake, such as extra defenders creeping toward the line or a return man cheating up early.
Use this against opponents who have already been burned once by another fake in this set, since they will overcommit to defending the pass fakes like Fake Punt FB Pass or Fake Punt X Curl.
Mix this call in after running a normal Punt 2 a few times in the same game so the defense relaxes and stops respecting the fake package.
Once the ball is snapped, get vertical fast and trust the edge blocking rather than trying to bounce it outside too early against disciplined contain defenders.
