PA Dagger U Cross is a play-action dropback concept out of Singleback U Off Stack that layers a vertical dagger combo on one side with a deep crosser attacking from the opposite alignment. Off the play fake, the two stacked receivers run a seam-clear vertical paired with an under route sitting at the sticks, while the third receiver runs a deep in-breaking crosser that stretches the field horizontally underneath the safeties, and a check release back adds a shallow out for a checkdown against blitz pressure. This is both a Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater, with the primary read starting on the crosser working across the middle before working back to the dagger combo on the stack side.
Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, since this concept is built to punish both Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells. Watch for a user linebacker sitting in a shallow zone or spying the crosser, as a well timed lurk defender can jump the in-breaking route and bait a turnover. Post-snap, track the flow of the underneath zone defenders, if they overreact to the play-action fake the crosser should be wide open in the vacated middle. Man coverage with no help over the top from a deep safety is the biggest vulnerability, since the dagger combo creates natural separation against man beaters. Disguised blitzes with the crosser's defender showing blitz late can shut this down quickly, so check the checkdown option to the back if pressure arrives before routes develop.
Use the play fake to freeze linebackers and hold safety rotation, then attack the void the crosser creates in the middle of the field.
Against Cover 2, key the deep safeties before the snap, if they sit at 10 to 12 yards the crosser should have room to work between the hashes before the safeties can close.
Against Cover 3, work your first read to the crosser since it settles into the seam vacated by a three deep shell rolling to one side.
Pair this play with Inside Zone or HB Counter Str earlier in a series to set up the play-action fake with legitimate run tendencies, making linebackers bite harder on the boot action.
Best called on second and medium to second and long, giving enough time for the deep crosser and dagger routes to develop while still respecting down and distance.
