Inside Zone Split is a base zone run play out of Singleback U Off Stack with 12 personnel. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing in a zone blocking scheme with double team combos at the point of attack, while the HB takes a downhill path off the RB alignment behind the QB with a slight split action mesh point. The two stacked receivers to the left are not featured in the run concept and are used as decoys to hold corners and safeties out of the box. Your primary read is the frontside double team combo block, reading the play side gap first before bouncing to the backside cutback lane if the defense flows too hard.
Key the frontside linebacker depth and flow, if he attacks the line too fast you can cut back against the grain. Watch for a stacked box with eight defenders, this alignment kills the run since the numbers advantage disappears. Identify user controlled defenders sitting in the A or B gap pre-snap, this signals a potential run blitz or nano blitz designed to stop inside zone. Look at safety depth, if both safeties are shallow near the box the defense is selling run support and you should consider audibling to a play-action shot instead. Watch cornerback press alignment on the stacked receivers, if they are jumping outside routes aggressively it signals man coverage and the defense may be light in the box for the run.
Check the defensive front pre-snap and confirm whether the box count favors the run before snapping it.
Use this play against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box to guarantee a numbers advantage.
Hot route the stacked receivers into quick screens or streaks if you diagnose man coverage to keep defenders honest and prevent extra run support.
Pair this with PA Boot Slide or PA Dagger U Cross out of the same formation to keep linebackers hesitant on run fits once you have established Inside Zone Split tendencies.
Use HB Zone Alert Smoke as a changeup if the defense starts crashing hard downhill to stop the inside zone look.
Best called on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, when you want positive, low risk gains and clock control.
