Inside Zone out of Singleback U Off Stack (12 personnel) is a true zone blocking run play with the offensive line stepping in unison to the play side, sealing rushing lanes based on flow and leverage rather than pre-determined gaps. The stacked TE alignment gives the run an extra blocker at the second level to help climb to linebackers or seal the edge, and the HB reads his line's blocking flow to find the crease. This is a downhill run play designed to attack light boxes and gap-shooting fronts, with the primary read being the frontside double team and B-gap crease before bouncing outside if the backside cuts.
Defensive Reads
Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 or 3-4 front pre-snap since heavier fronts with two-gap ends make zone cutback lanes harder to find. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: linebackers sitting shallow and reading the zone flow can trigger fast fills that clog the frontside crease. Key the strong safety alignment, if he is stacked in the box pre-snap expect an extra run defender and a tougher inside track. This play struggles against gap-control run blitzes and A-gap shooters since the zone-blocking scheme cannot reroute fast enough against penetration. Post-snap, watch for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard to the play side, since a quick backside cutback can gash a defense over-pursuing the frontside crease.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a numbers advantage.
Use the stacked TE alignment to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety down, which tells you whether to expect an extra run blitzer.
Hot route the backside TE to a chip or seal block if you see a fast defensive end crashing hard to disrupt backside cutback lanes.
Pair this with PA Boot Slide or PA Dagger U Cross from the same formation to keep linebackers honest and prevent them from sitting on run reads.
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short when the defense is more likely to show base fronts rather than nickel or dime blitz packages.
