HB Counter Str is a gap scheme power run out of Singleback U Off Stack with 12 personnel, showing two stacked receivers to the left and the HB taking a counter step before hitting the strong side gap. The offensive line pulls the backside guard and puller to lead through the hole while the TEs and playside linemen wall off penetration, creating a misdirection look that punishes overaggressive linebackers flowing to the initial step. This is a pure run play with no route concept to beat coverage, so the primary read progression is the puller leading through the hole, then the HB reading the block on the edge defender before deciding to bend it back or press upfield.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth, a single high safety or a box safety creeping down signals man or run support that this counter action can exploit if the edge is sealed. Watch linebacker gap discipline, if the Mike and Will flow hard to the initial counter step, the cutback lane opens immediately behind the pulling guard. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker, if they crash inside on the counter step, bounce this run outside for a bigger gain. This play struggles against gap-sound defenses that stay home and defenses running a 46 Bear front or heavy blitz packages that get penetration before the pullers arrive. User a linebacker to sit on the counter path and attack the pulling guard, this is the most effective way to blow up the concept before the HB commits to a lane.
Usage Tips
Run this out of a personnel grouping defenses respect as run heavy so linebackers overreact to the counter step and create bigger cutback lanes.
Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has 7 or more in the box against 12 personnel this play still works because the misdirection freezes the second level.
User the fullback or lead TE at the point of attack to seal the edge defender manually instead of trusting the CPU block, this is the single biggest factor in explosive runs with this concept.
Pair this play with PA Boot Slide or PA Dagger U Cross from the same formation so linebackers who bite on counter action get gashed by play-action shots later in the drive.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are still base personnel and have not started stacking the box to sell out against the run.
