Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Singleback U Off Stack is an outside zone run that sends the entire offensive line laterally to stretch the defense horizontally before the back picks his crease. With 12 personnel on the field, the two tight ends give you extra edge blockers to seal the perimeter, making this a heavy run play rather than a pass concept, RPO, or screen. The primary read is the frontside double team at the point of attack, then the back reads the play side tackle and tight end blocks to decide between bouncing outside, bending it back to the cutback lane, or pressing straight downhill if the backside cutback opens.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the box count and safety depth since a light box or single high safety rotated away from the run strength is an easy green light to attack the edge. Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, if they crash hard down the line the backside cutback lane will be wide open once the tackle and tight end seal their blocks. Post-snap, key the flow of the middle linebacker, if he overruns the play chasing the stretch action, cut the ball back immediately behind him. This run struggles against gap exchange fronts, scrape exchange linebackers, or defenses that user the play side defensive end to stay home and string the play out to the sideline. Heavy blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge before the tight ends can climb will blow this play up, so avoid calling it into an obvious all out pressure look.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect outside zone before you attack inside with Inside Zone or Duo Wrap from the same set. Use pre-snap motion or a formation flip to check if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety toward the run strength, since a heavy box signals you should audible to a quick game beater instead. Against fast flow defenses that crash hard to the play side, hot route the backside tight end to stay in as an extra blocker and manually control the fullback or lead blocker to seal the cutback lane. Pair this with HB Wk Toss and HB Counter Str in the same play call sequence so defenders keying run flow get manipulated by the mirrored footwork and misdirection. On third and short, this is a strong call because the stretch action holds linebackers just long enough for the tight ends to climb and open a cutback for a chain mover.
