HB Zone Alert Smoke is an inside zone run out of Singleback U Off Stack with a built in bubble screen alert to the backside slot. The diagram shows the offensive line stepping right on zone blocking tracks while the HB takes a zone path behind them, with the stacked slot receiver breaking outward on a quick smoke route as his alert man beater or hot throw. This gives the quarterback a run pass option style pre-snap decision: hand off the zone run or throw the alert screen if the defense sells out against the run. Primary read progression is pre-snap: check the alert receiver leverage and flat defender depth first, and if the numbers favor the smoke throw it immediately, otherwise hand off the inside zone read.
Watch the slot cornerback pre-snap: soft coverage or off man invites the smoke throw, while press coverage or a hard flat defender should bait the quarterback into handing off instead. Count the box defenders before the snap, if there are six or more in the box the alert smoke is the higher percentage option against this zone run design. Post-snap, track linebacker flow and gap fits on the play side, aggressive downhill linebackers can be gashed by the cutback lane if the front overpursues the zone stretch. Look for a user controlled defender flashing into the backside flat, this is the biggest threat to the alert smoke and should force a run read instead. Zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with an under linebacker sitting in the flat can shut down the smoke option, so patience with the inside zone handoff becomes the better path.
Check the flat defender and slot cornerback leverage before the snap to decide between the zone alert throw and the actual handoff.
If the defense shows a hard down safety or extra man in the box, throw the alert smoke immediately for a free access completion.
Use this play on early downs to keep defenses honest about crashing the alert receiver, which opens up the inside zone run later in a drive.
Pair this with Inside Zone and Inside Zone Split from the same set so the defense cannot key blocking patterns based on personnel or alignment.
Sequence this after PA Boot Slide or PA Dagger U Cross to condition the defense to respect play action, making the alert smoke and inside zone hits more effective against aggressive linebacker flow.
