Duo Wrap is a gap scheme run play out of Singleback U Off Stack with 12 personnel that leans on double team blocks at the point of attack before a puller wraps around to seal the edge, creating a vertical crease for the running back. This is not a man or zone beater since it is a pure run play designed to grind out yardage through downhill blocking rather than exploit coverage. The primary read is the running back reading the double team push at the play side gap first, then keying the wrap blocker to decide whether to bend the run outside or stick it up inside behind the double team.
Defensive Reads
Check the box count before the snap, if there are seven or more defenders stacked in the box, Duo Wrap will struggle to find room since the extra hat can beat the puller to the point of attack Watch linebacker alignment, if the mike is shaded toward the play side gap pre-snap, that is a sign the defense is keying run and Duo Wrap will hit a stacked front Man coverage on the outside receivers is not the concern here, focus on the second level defenders and whether they are reading run or staying home for pass responsibility A cover 2 or cover 3 shell with light boxes is where this run play thrives, since fewer defenders are in the run fit and the double team plus wrap block can control the edge Beware of a user controlled linebacker sitting in the hole or crashing down hard on the snap, since a well timed user blitz or spy can blow up the wrap block before it seals the edge
Usage Tips
Run Duo Wrap on early downs in normal or short yardage situations when you want to establish tempo and set up play action later in the drive
Look at linebacker depth pre-snap, if the mike and backer are sitting tight to the box in a 4-3 or 3-4 look, the double team at the point of attack should still win, so trust the design and stay patient behind it
Use this play against base fronts and light boxes rather than heavy blitz packages, since extra defenders crashing downhill can beat the puller to the hole before the wrap block sets up
Pair Duo Wrap with Inside Zone and HB Counter Str in the same set to keep defenders guessing on gap direction, this makes your run game unpredictable while still hitting downhill
Once the defense starts loading the box to stop Duo Wrap, hit them with PA Dagger U Cross or PA Boot Slide off the same formation to punish overaggressive linebackers and safeties
