The jet motion pulls flow from linebackers and stresses the defense to fit both the perimeter fake and the interior zone run, while the offensive line executes standard zone blocking with double teams at the point of attack and a backside cutoff block. Your primary read is the frontside combo block: track the playside guard and tackle to see if the double team creates a bubble, then decide between the bend, bang, or bounce lane based on how the linebackers flow to the jet fake.
Defensive Reads
Key the backside linebacker first, if he bites on the jet motion fake this play hits big through the vacated backside lane. Check safety alignment before the snap, single high shells with the free safety sitting in the middle of the field tend to leave light boxes that this zone run can exploit immediately. Watch for defensive ends and edge defenders staying home instead of chasing the jet fake, disciplined edge play forces you to stay patient and trust the interior double teams. Nickel and dime packages with lighter boxes are the best matchup for this play since the jet fake removes another defender from the run fit, while base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with linebackers who do not bite on misdirection can shut this down by staying square and filling gaps. Watch for aggressive user blitzes off the edge, since a fast defender crashing downhill unblocked can blow up the play before the zone blocks develop.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are honoring outside run threats and jet sweep tendencies from your other calls in the set, especially after running actual Jet Sweep Wk to sell the fake. Watch pre-snap for linebacker depth and alignment, if the backside linebacker cheats hard to the jet side motion you have an easy bang or bounce lane away from the fake. Against defenses stacking the box with six or seven defenders, this play still works because the fake often pulls one extra defender out of the run fit. Pair this call with HB Dive and Mtn HB Duo in the same series so the defense cannot sit on one blocking scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on every snap. If you see a user controlled linebacker crashing hard on jet sweep fakes on tape, stick with the interior zone read and trust your fullback or TE to seal the edge defender.
