HB Dive out of Singleback Tight Doubles is a straight downhill run play that sends the HB directly into the A or B gap immediately after the snap. The diagram shows the interior line and TE blocking straight ahead at the point of attack while the two outside receivers run vertical stems to occupy the corners and clear space, with no route combo designed to be thrown. This is a pure run play built to attack single gaps for a quick, decisive hit, and the primary read is the HB identifying the first crease off the double team up front rather than bouncing outside.
Watch the middle linebacker depth and alignment pre-snap. If he is sitting tight to the line in run support, the dive lane will be crowded. Identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front. Heavier fronts with extra defensive linemen shut down the dive quickly since there is no double team advantage. Key the safety alignment. A safety creeping into the box pre-snap signals run support and should discourage calling the dive. Post-snap, look for user-controlled defenders flowing downhill immediately, since this indicates the defense anticipated the run and filled the gap before the HB could hit the hole. Nano blitzes or A gap blitzes from the defense will blow up this play instantly, so avoid calling HB Dive against defenses known for interior blitz packages.
Call this play in short yardage or goal line situations where you need a quick, low risk gain between the tackles.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or fewer in the box, this play has a clean numbers advantage for the interior gap.
Use the HB Dive to set up HB Inside Zone later in the drive since both plays start with similar HB alignment and mirrored initial steps, making it harder for defenders to key the run direction.
Avoid calling this against stacked eight man fronts or heavy blitz packages that overload the interior gaps, since there is no lead blocker to clean up extra defenders.
Pair this play with PA Boot or Shallow Cross from the same set to keep linebackers honest and slow down their downhill run fits on early downs.
