Mtn HB Split Zone is a run play out of Singleback Tight Doubles that uses inside zone blocking with a split flow element from the tight end or fullback-replacement H-back crossing the formation to seal the backside edge. The offensive line zone steps to the play side while the split flow blocker kicks out or seals the backside defender, giving the HB a true one-cut, one-back run scheme. The primary read progression starts backside: the HB reads the split flow block on the edge defender first, then works to the play side double team and the first available crease off the guard's zone step, pressing the line before cutting off the linebacker's flow.
Watch for the backside defensive end squeezing hard down the line pre-snap, that indicates a scrape exchange or edge set defender who will spill the split flow block. Identify linebacker depth at the snap, linebackers sitting shallow and reading the mesh point are keying run and will fill the play side gap fast, forcing the HB to bounce backside. Against a 4-3 or 43 under front with a Mike linebacker stacked tight, this play struggles because the extra body clogs the zone read lanes before the split flow blocker can seal. This run hits best against light boxes and odd fronts where the backside edge defender is upfield and susceptible to the split flow kick out, creating a clean backside cutback lane. User linebackers flowing hard to the play side action key are the biggest threat, if the user LB stays home and reads the mesh point, expect a tackle for loss or minimal gain on the cutback.
Run this out of 11 personnel on early downs to keep defenses honest against your pass-heavy Tight Doubles menu like Shallow Cross and Bingo Cross.
Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 11 personnel, consider bailing to a hot route flare or checking to a quick game beater instead.
Use manual control on the HB to press the play side hole and freeze linebackers before making your cut, this sells zone flow and opens the backside crease created by the split action.
Sequence this with Mtn HB Duo and HB Inside Zone earlier in a series so linebackers over commit to downhill run fits, then hit them with Mtn PA Boot Slide or PA Boot off the same look for a play-action counter.
Best called on second and short or first and ten in normal down and distance, avoid it on clear passing downs since the run action loses leverage against dime or nickel sub packages.
