Mtn Y-Corner Z-Choice is a man beater out of the Shotgun Y Off Trio Close WK set that stresses the boundary with a corner route from the Y while the Z runs a choice (option) route that adjusts based on the leverage of the defender covering him. The Trio bunch look creates natural picks and rub opportunities that make it tough for man defenders to stay connected off the line. The primary read starts with the Y-Corner attacking the deep outside quarter, then works down to the Z-Choice as the underneath option against off coverage or zone drops, with the running back check release as the last resort against pressure.
Watch the safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety often signals Cover 3 or Cover 1 which opens up the Y-Corner route against a rotating corner. Key the flat defender after the snap, if he sinks too deep the Z-Choice route will sit down in the void for an easy underneath conversion. Look for user lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate zone, they can jump the Y-Corner route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness for this play since the corner route can be undercut, so be ready to hot route the Y to a slant or in-cut if you diagnose man pre-snap. Blitz-heavy defenses with a nano blitz package can disrupt the timing of the corner route, so keep an eye on defensive line stunts and be prepared to check down quickly to the running back.
Identify pre-snap whether the corner over the Z is playing off or press, since the choice route reads leverage and breaks inside against off coverage and outside or vertical against press. Use motion or a hard count to bait the defense into showing man or zone before the snap, this play punishes both if you read it correctly. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the Y-Corner route since it can climb the seam and settle behind the flat defender in the hole. Best used on second or third and medium situations where defenders are more likely to sit in zone and give the choice route room to convert.
