Mtn Duo is the run play out of the Y Off Trio Close WK set in Shotgun 11 personnel, built on a duo blocking scheme where the offensive line double teams at the point of attack and climbs to the second level while the fullback or extra blocker helps seal the edge. This is a downhill gap run designed to get the running back through the A or B gap with a double team push before he reads the linebacker flow and picks his lane. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is patience behind the double team, then a one cut decision based on which linebacker gets sealed first, pressing the line of scrimmage before breaking to daylight.
Identify the strong side linebacker depth before the snap, if he is sitting too far off the line the duo double team will win easily and create a big cutback lane. Watch for a nano blitz look from the defense with a defensive tackle shaded into the play side gap, this can blow up the double team timing and force a negative play if not adjusted. Key the safety rotation post-snap, if both safeties stay deep in a two high shell the box is light and the duo run should have a favorable numbers advantage at the point of attack. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from depth are the biggest threat to this play, so the running back must locate the user linebacker or safety before committing to a lane. Against stacked eight man fronts or heavy blitz packages disguised as man coverage, this run play struggles and you should be ready to check to a quick game pass instead.
Run Mtn Duo on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage when you want to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play-action later in the drive.
Check the box count pre-snap and only hand it off into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, otherwise consider a hot route or audible to a different concept in the set.
If the defense shows a two high safety shell with soft linebacker depth, this duo run hits well because the second level flows slower to the play side.
Pair Mtn Duo with Mtn PA Cross Switch or Mtn PA X Over later in the series once you have established the run, since the play-action off this same personnel and formation freezes linebackers who bit on early duo runs.
Use motion or a quick pre-snap shift to bait the defense into showing blitz or stacking the box, then kill the play to a quick pass like Snag HB Flat if you see an overloaded front.
