Breakdown

Mtn Mesh Flood combines a classic mesh concept on one side with a three level flood to the other, giving the quarterback a full field access read against both man and zone coverage. The mesh creates natural rubs to shake off man defenders underneath while the flood side stacks a corner route, a deep out, and a flat route to overload one sideline against zone shells. Primary progression starts with the flood side high to low (corner to out to flat), and if the flood is capped the quarterback works back to the mesh crossers underneath for a man beater outlet.

Defensive Reads

Read the flood side cornerback depth at the snap, if he sinks with the corner route the out route sits in the window for an easy pitch and catch. Key the middle linebacker and any user controlled defender flowing to the mesh crossers, a hard trigger downhill means the shallow crosser is picked off so bail to the flood side immediately. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone on the mesh side, this indicates zone coverage designed to jump the crossers and take away the easy completion. Identify blitz packages that bring five or six rushers with man coverage behind them, this play is vulnerable if the protection cannot hold up long enough for the flood routes to develop. Against Cover 3, the deep third defender to the flood side is the key, if he widens to the corner route the flat route becomes wide open underneath for a quick check down.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre snap, if you see two high safeties bail to the flood side quickly since the corner route can stress a Cover 2 cornerback before the safety rotates over. Against man coverage, target the mesh concept first since the natural pick action creates easy separation on linebackers and slot corners in trail technique. Use motion or a quick shift if available to confirm man versus zone before the snap, this play punishes both but the read progression changes based on shell. Pair this call with Mtn Fork Dagger or Mtn PA Cross Switch in your play sequencing so the defense has to respect both underneath mesh traffic and vertical shots off similar formation looks. Best used on second or third and medium when you need a high percentage completion with explosive play upside off the flood corner route.
