Mtn Mesh Z Rail is a mesh concept out of Shotgun 11 personnel that combines the classic underneath crossing routes with a Z receiver rail route working vertically up the sideline. The mesh action from the two inside receivers creates natural traffic to shake man defenders while the Z rail gives you a home run shot against overaggressive corners or blown coverage. This is a man beater first and foremost, though the rail route also stresses zone defenses that sink their corners too deep, and your primary progression is mesh underneath to the shallow crosser, then quickly climbing to the Z rail if the safety bites down on the shorter routes.
Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they crash down hard on the mesh crossers that confirms man coverage and tells you the rail is your best answer Key the safety over the Z receiver, if he is rotating late or cheating toward the mesh concept the rail route will have a clean lane down the sideline Identify user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone since a smart user will sit on the mesh crossers and jump your first read, forcing you to climb to the rail Look for Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with corners playing deep off coverage, this coverage type limits the effectiveness of the rail and forces you to live underneath with the mesh routes Beware of a well timed blitz since the mesh concept takes time to develop, if you see extra rushers showing pre-snap be ready to check down early or throw the rail on timing before the pocket collapses
Take a pre-snap look at the corner over the Z receiver, if he is playing off man or shows outside leverage the rail route has a green light to win deep so key on him before the snap
Use this against man coverage on early downs or in 2nd and medium situations where defenses expect a run and get caught in man match concepts
If the defense shows a single high safety shell, prioritize the mesh crossers immediately since the rail will likely be capped by the deep safety rotating over
Hot route the underneath mesh receiver into a sit route against zone shells to give yourself a quick, easy completion if the rail is not open
Pair this play with Mtn Fork Dagger or Mtn PA Cross Switch in your call sheet sequence to condition the defense into expecting shorter mesh concepts, then hit the rail for the explosive play once they start jumping the underneath routes
