HB Power O out of Shotgun Y Off Trio Close WK is a gap scheme run play that pulls the backside guard (and sometimes a tight end or fullback-alignment blocker) across the formation to lead through the hole while the offensive line blocks down at the point of attack. This is a downhill run play designed to create a numbers advantage at the line of scrimmage using double team blocks on the down linemen and a lead blocker isolating the first threat at the second level. The primary read for the ball carrier is the pulling blocker's kick out or lead block on the edge defender or linebacker, reading whether to bend the run inside the pulling guard or bounce it outside based on how the defense flows.
Read the play side defensive end and linebacker fit first, since Power O relies on the double team to move the down lineman and the pulling blocker to handle the first free hitter at the second level. Watch for a linebacker blitzing through the play side gap before the pulling blocker arrives, which is the classic nano blitz look that blows up Power O before it develops. Check the safety depth and leverage, because a single high safety who reads run fast can crash down and cut off the cutback lane, while two high shells leave more room for the back to bend it back against the grain. Look at defensive tackle alignment and whether the interior line is in an odd front with a true nose, since a heavy odd front can clog the double team gap and force a bounce outside into unblocked flow. If the linebackers are stacked and reading the mesh point quickly, expect them to flow hard and fill cutback lanes, meaning committing to the called hole early and trusting your blocks is safer than trying to freelance outside.
Check the box count before the snap and only run HB Power O into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box to avoid running into a stacked front. Identify if the defense is showing run blitz with linebackers creeping to the line, since Power O with its double team up front can still handle inside blitzes better than outside zone. Use pre-snap motion or shifts from Y Off Trio Close WK to bait the defense into declaring man or zone coverage on the perimeter, which tells you if the safety is likely to crash down on the run fit. Pair this play with Mtn PA Cross Switch and Mtn PA X Over from the same set so the defense respects the play-action shot off identical run action and personnel look. Best called on early downs or in short yardage and goal line situations where you want to force one on one blocks and trust your lead blocker to seal the edge or wall off the linebacker.
