This is primarily a man beater because the dagger concept naturally creates a pick and rub situation off the bunch alignment, though the deep dig also settles into soft spots against zone if the underneath defenders bite on the flat route. The primary read progression starts with the vertical clear route to see if it pulls the safety, then works to the deep dig sitting at the second level, and finally checks down to the fork route in the flat if the middle is clogged.
Pre-snap, identify safety depth and alignment, since a single high safety signals man coverage where the dagger dig is most dangerous against linebackers in man match. Watch for cornerback press alignment on the bunch side, as press man invites natural rub and pick action that frees the underneath fork route immediately at the snap. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker or the hook defender in zone looks, because if he sinks with the vertical clear route, the window for the dig opens up right behind him.
