Breakdown

Z Spot out of Shotgun Wing Trips WK is a classic Spot concept designed to attack zone coverage with a triangle read on one side of the field while giving you a simple man beater backside. The Z runs the spot route underneath, the slot receiver runs the corner route over the top, and the flat route from the trips side completes the high low low stretch, forcing a linebacker or nickel defender to choose between levels. Your primary read progresses from the flat route to the spot route to the corner route, working low to high based on how the underneath defender flows, with the backside single receiver available as a hot read against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens to the flat route the spot window opens immediately underneath for an easy completion. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since Cover 3 and Cover 1 zone drops leave the spot route sitting in a soft void that is tough for a linebacker to cover in space. Key the underneath linebacker or nickel defender's depth, if he sits shallow expect him to jump the spot route, so progress your eyes to the corner route working over the top. Beware disguised Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with a hard flat defender and a deep half safety, since that combination can squeeze both the flat and corner routes and force a checkdown. Watch for user controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle zone, since a smart user player can bait the quarterback into the spot route and jump the throw for a pick six.

Usage Tips

Use this against teams that sit in zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 since the spot concept is built to sit defenders down and create natural throwing windows underneath the corner route.

Check the flat defender before the snap, if he is sitting wide or cheating outside, hit the spot route in the middle since that soft spot will be open.

Against man coverage look immediately to the backside single receiver, since the trips side traffic can clog rub routes and make it tough to separate quickly.

Pair this with Four Verticals and PA Y Wheel from the same set so defenders respect the vertical shots off similar Trips formation alignment, opening up the shorter spot window later in a series.

Best used on second and medium or third and short since the spot route sits at a reliable completion depth and the corner route offers a chain moving conversion shot.

Use play action rollout concepts like PA Power Y Pop earlier in a drive to bait linebackers into biting on run fakes, making the spot route sit down even more against overaggressive run defense.
