Quads Sprint Spot is a quick-game zone beater built off the Spot concept, using four receivers bunched to one side to flood the underneath zones. The design combines a flat route, a corner route, and a spot (settle) route working in front of linebackers and underneath safeties, with the quarterback sprinting slightly to the trips side for a cleaner throwing lane. The primary read starts with the flat defender: if he widens with the flat route, the quarterback works inside to the spot sitting in the hole, and if the corner route clears the zone vertically, the spot becomes the alert throw against Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells.
Identify the corner and safety leverage on the trips side before the snap, if the corner is playing outside shade with a safety over the top, expect Cover 3 or Cover 4 and target the spot route sitting underneath. Watch the flat defender's first step at the snap, if he widens immediately with the flat route the spot route behind him becomes wide open in the honey hole. Key the middle linebacker's drop, a slow or shallow drop into the flat zone signals a coverage that is vulnerable to the spot sitting route. Beware disguised Cover 1 or Cover 0 man pressure, since the sprint action can put the quarterback in a bad spot if the backside is left unaccounted for against a blitz. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow spot zone, a smart human defender will sit on the spot route and bait the quarterback into an interception.
Use this play on third and short to third and medium when you expect zone coverage, since the Spot concept is designed to sit defenders down and create easy completions underneath.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat side linebacker and slot corner, if they are sitting deep in a zone shell the spot route will have room to settle in the honey hole.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see man coverage across the board, since the base concept is more effective against zone drops than tight man coverage.
Pair this play with Quads Cross Y Delay or Quads Drive earlier in the drive so the defense respects the quads formation and starts cheating toward the flood side, opening up the delay or drive concepts as counters.
Against blitz-heavy defenses, get the ball out on rhythm to the flat route as a built-in hot read, since the sprint action naturally gets the quarterback moving away from backside pressure.
