Counter Y out of Shotgun Wing Trips WK is a gap scheme run play built around misdirection, pulling the backside guard and the Y tight end to lead through the hole while the offensive line blocks down. The counter action momentarily freezes flowing linebackers, creating a natural cutback lane for the running back. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression is the mesh point handoff followed by the running back keying the puller (usually the H or Y blocker) to decide whether to press the hole or bounce it outside based on how the edge defender and second level flow.
Identify the box count and alignment before the snap, since Counter Y is most effective against light boxes or defenses that are slow flowing over the top. Post snap, key the backside defensive end and any overhang defender. If they sit home and do not chase the pulling blocker, the cutback lane disappears and the play is stuffed for minimal gain. Watch for user controlled linebackers spying the counter action instead of flowing with the fake zone steps. A disciplined user defender who reads pulling linemen quickly can blow up the play at the mesh point. Look for scrape exchange technique from the defense. If the defensive end squeezes down and a linebacker scrapes over the top to replace him, the running back needs to cut it back inside rather than bouncing outside. This play struggles against fast flow defenses and gap sound run fits with disciplined linebackers, but it wins against teams that overpursue zone runs or leave the edge unaccounted for on the backside.
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when the defense shows base personnel and is likely to flow hard to run fits.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box with no clear overhang defender showing pinch, consider checking to a pass like Stick or Switch Comeback instead.
Watch linebacker depth before the snap. Linebackers sitting shallow at five yards or less are more susceptible to the counter misdirection than backers already at depth reading run.
Use Counter Y after establishing Inside Zone Split or HB Base earlier in a series so linebackers start keying downhill flow, then hit them with the opposite gap action for a bigger gain.
Against aggressive user defenders who crash hard on zone runs, this counter action punishes overpursuit, so mix it in as a changeup once you see the user jumping zone run fits.
