Breakdown

Quads Drive is a man beater built off a four wide receiver bunch to one side that creates natural rub and pick action against man coverage. The route concept features drive and shallow crossing routes working underneath while an outside receiver stems vertically to hold the safety, and the blocking scheme is a standard shotgun pass protection with the running back releasing late as a checkdown. The primary read progression starts with the shallow drive route working from the trips side across the field, then works to the intermediate crosser, and finally checks down to the running back if the underneath window is not there.

Defensive Reads

Check for man coverage first by looking at corner alignment on the quads bunch, tight press or inside shade usually confirms man responsibility and sets up the rub concept to work. Identify the deep safety shell before the snap, a single high safety with man corners is the ideal look for this play since the crossers will beat man leverage. Post snap, key the underneath linebacker or nickel defender assigned to the shallow drive route, if he sits and reads the quarterback's eyes instead of running with the crosser this indicates zone coverage and the drive route window will close. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow crossing lane, aggressive user players will jump the drive route so have the quarterback ready to reset to the checkdown or work the vertical stem. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with linebackers sitting underneath can shut this play down, in those situations the boundary vertical route or the checkdown becomes the better answer than forcing the drive concept.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap such as corners lined up tight on the quads bunch with a single high safety before committing to this play call.

Use the drive route as your primary hot route target against man to man since the natural rub from the bunch alignment creates instant separation.

This play works best on second and medium to third and short since the shallow crossers develop quickly and give the quarterback a rhythm throw.

Pair Quads Drive with Quads Cross Y Delay and Quads Sprint Spot in the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick game and delayed developing concepts out of the same quads look.

If the defense shows zone shell or drops a linebacker into the shallow crossing lane, be ready to reset to the checkdown or work the vertical stem on the boundary receiver instead of forcing the drive route.
