Mtn Inside Zone Split is a base run play out of the Shotgun Wing Trips WK set that uses an inside zone blocking scheme with a split zone element, meaning the TE or fullback works across the formation to kick out the backside edge defender instead of climbing to the second level. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, reading down linemen and linebacker flow to create a natural cutback lane, while the split flow blocker seals the backside for a cutback run. The primary read progression starts with the playside double team or combo block, then works to the play side linebacker fit, and finally checks the backside cutback lane if the defense overpursues.
Watch the play side defensive tackle and linebacker fit before the snap, since this run beats light boxes and defenses that widen their front to cover Wing Trips receivers. If the Mike linebacker is stacked tight behind the play side guard, expect a quick fill that requires an immediate cutback read. Check for a nine technique or wide five alignment on the play side edge, since this often signals an outside contain rush that the split flow blocker can seal for a cutback crease. Man coverage looks with the safety rotated to the Wing Trips side can leave light boxes, which favors the zone run, while two high shells with linebackers reading run first will clog both the playside gap and cutback lane. Beware of overload blitzes from the strength of Wing Trips, since extra defenders crashing downhill can beat the double team before the back reaches the line of scrimmage, so be ready to check to a quick pass if you see it pre-snap.
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short when you need a balanced gap scheme run that can hit either direction based on the front. Check the box count pre-snap and if the defense has six or more in the box, consider motioning or checking to a play-action shot instead. Identify whether the defense is playing a one gap or two gap front, since one gap fronts open up cutback lanes faster against this split zone concept. Pair this play with Power Read or Counter Bash in the same set to keep linebackers guessing between zone track and gap scheme run action, which slows their run fits. Against aggressive linebacker blitzes, trust the split flow block to seal the edge and stay patient behind your zone read landmarks rather than bouncing outside too early.
