HB Base out of Shotgun Wing Trips WK is an inside zone run concept that leans on your offensive line's zone blocking to create a natural cutback lane for the HB. The three receiver trips side pulls defenders wide and thins out the box, giving your interior blockers a numbers advantage against base fronts. Your primary read starts at the playside double team, then works to the backside cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged, so patience behind the line is key before committing to a gap.
Identify the linebacker depth before the snap, since shallow linebackers who are keying run fits will fill gaps faster and force an earlier cutback read Watch for the defense rotating a safety down into the box from the trips side, which signals they are respecting the pass and leaving the run fit thinner than it looks This run concept struggles against a stacked 4-3 or 46 front with linebackers sitting tight to the line, since there is no natural cutback creases when every gap is accounted for User controlled defenders flowing hard downhill from depth can blow up the cutback lane late, so avoid this play against opponents who consistently spy or crash a linebacker inside on zone reads A cornerback blitz off the edge from the trips side can beat this play before the zone stretch fully develops, so check protection or motion the HB away from that side if you see an overload look pre-snap
Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box, since the trips side should be pulling a safety or extra defender out wide
Use the trips formation to bait defenses into rotating a safety down, then attack the vacated backside cutback lane instead of forcing it frontside
Pair this with PA Power Y Pop or PA Read from the same set so defenses cannot sit on the run fix without opening up play action shots off the same look
Run this on early downs in normal or run heavy personnel situations to stay ahead of the chains and set up RPO Alert Out later in the series
If the defense shows a stacked box or heavy blitz look pre-snap, check to Inside Zone Split or Wide Trap instead since HB Base loses its cutback advantage against gap exchange fronts
Manually control the fullback or lead blocker at the point of attack against odd fronts to seal the extra gap defender the zone scheme cannot naturally account for
