Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Shotgun Wing Trips WK sends four receivers straight up the field to stretch the defense from sideline to sideline, making it a premier zone beater that also punishes single-high man coverages when you win a matchup on the outside. There is no run action or play-action mechanism here, this is a straight dropback passing concept built to attack deep zone voids and create one-on-one shots downfield. The primary read progression starts with the safety alignment pre-snap, then works middle seam to backside vertical, using the middle of the field read to decide which safety is going to carry a route before working to the outside verticals if the middle is capped.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify single high versus two high safety looks, single high Cover 3 or Cover 1 leaves the seams vulnerable while true two high Cover 2 or Cover 4 can bracket the outside verticals with cornerback and safety help. Post snap, watch for the middle linebacker or a user controlled defender dropping into a deep middle hole, that defender is the key lurk threat that can undercut the inside seam route if you throw it late. Cover 3 with a sky safety rotating late is a common shell that this play beats because the flat zone defender cannot get enough width to affect both outside verticals at once. Match zone concepts like Pattern Match Cover 4 are the toughest defense to run this against since defenders will man up on any vertical stem, so be ready to check to a hot route or throw with anticipation before the defensive backs can mirror the route. Watch for a delayed blitz off the edge or a nano blitz look pre snap, if the offensive line count is even you should still have time to hit the first read seam route before pressure affects the quarterback's platform.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties bail into deep quarters or deep thirds post snap, target the seam route away from the safety that widens out of the middle first.

Use hot routes to convert the shallow crosser or check release option into a hot route sit if you diagnose a zone blitz, this gives you a checkdown against pressure without abandoning the vertical stretch.

This play thrives on third and long or in two minute drill situations when defenses often play soft zone shells like 2 Man or Cover 3, since the four verticals will overload the deep zones faster than the defenders can rotate.

Pair this call with Stick or Quads Drive earlier in a series to bait linebackers into sitting on shorter routes, then come back with Four Verticals once you have shown enough short concepts that the defense creeps up in run support or shallow zone drops.

Against man coverage, user your best route runner on the seam route and use a subtle speed cut or rocket catch input at the top of the route to separate from a trailing corner or safety in man.
