Breakdown

Inside Zone Split is the base run play out of the Shotgun Wing Trips WK set, designed to attack the interior gaps with a split zone blocking scheme. The offensive line zone blocks in unison while the tight end or wing works across the formation to kick out the backside edge defender, giving the running back a clean cutback lane. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression belongs to the running back: identify the frontside double team, press the mesh point, and decide between the bang, bend, or bounce cutback lane based on how the linebackers flow.

Defensive Reads

Watch the Mike linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is stacked tight behind the defensive line expect quick flow to the play side that clogs the frontside gaps. Identify the defensive end or edge player being kicked out by the split flow blocker, if he squeezes hard inside the cutback lane opens immediately for the running back. Look for a lurking safety or user-controlled linebacker sitting in the alley, since aggressive user pursuit up the middle can be gashed with a bounce read to the perimeter. Against odd fronts with a nose tackle in a true zero technique, split zone struggles because the interior double team gets disrupted before the back can commit to a lane. If the defense shows a heavy blitz package with extra defenders crashing downhill immediately at the snap, this play can get blown up before the mesh point develops, so be ready to check to a quick pass concept like Stick or Slot Cross instead.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box, since split zone loses value against stacked fronts. If the defense shows a 4-3 or 3-4 look with linebackers sitting tight to the line, this play hits fast because the split flow puts extra hats on the frontside double team. Use this on early downs, especially first and ten or second and short, to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest. Pair this with PA Inverted Veer and Y Lead Read Option from the same set so the defense has to respect both the zone run action and the read option keys off identical formation motion. If the linebackers start crashing hard on split zone flow, counter with Counter Bash or GT Counter Bash to punish overaggressive linebacker pursuit. Against a defense that stacks the box every snap, check into HB Slip Screen or Mtn HB Slip Screen to make them pay for selling out on the run.
