PA Power Y Pop is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Wing Trips WK that sells the Power run scheme with pulling linemen before the QB pops the ball to the Y (tight end) working a quick sit route over the middle. The backfield action and blocking surge freeze linebackers and safeties, opening a window for the Y Pop as the primary read while outside receivers stretch the defense vertically as secondary options. This is a play-action man and zone beater designed to punish teams that bite on the run fake, with the tight end pop route serving as the built-in answer against both aggressive zone drops and man coverage that loses leverage on the play-action mesh.
Key the linebacker depth pre-snap. Linebackers sitting shallow or creeping toward the line indicate they are keying run, which plays directly into the Y Pop window. Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field. A user-controlled safety flowing down to the Y Pop route can jump the primary read and turn it into a pick six. Identify single-high versus two-high safety shells before the snap. Single-high alignments often mean the deep defender is reading run first, giving the Y Pop extra time to develop before help arrives. Recognize blitz packages that send extra defenders through the A or B gaps. Heavy interior pressure can collapse the pocket before the play fake fully sells, so account for a quick checkdown or throwaway. Against man coverage, look for linebackers or nickel defenders trailing the Y in man technique. If they stay attached and do not bite on the run fake, the pop route loses its natural leverage advantage.
Run this on early downs, especially 1st and 2nd and medium, when the defense is stacked against the Power run tag from earlier snaps in the sequence.
Pre-snap, check the box count and safety depth. If you see two safeties rotate down or linebackers creeping to the line, that is a strong sign they are respecting the run fake, which sets up the Y Pop perfectly.
Use Power Read and Counter Bash earlier in your play-calling sequence to condition the defense to bite on similar backfield action, then hit them with PA Power Y Pop to expose overaggressive run fits.
Hot route the backside outside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose man coverage before the snap, giving you a second manual throw option if the Y Pop is not open.
Against zone shells, key the flow of the linebackers. If they step up hard on the play fake, the Y Pop sits in the vacated window immediately after the ball fake completes.
