Stick out of Shotgun Wing Trips WK is a quick-game passing concept built to attack zone coverage with sticks and flat routes stacked to the trips side while a backside receiver runs a hitch or speed out as an outlet. The stick route sits down in the underneath zone window against linebackers while the flat route occupies the corner or force defender, creating a natural conflict read for zone defenders. Primary progression starts with the stick to flat combo on the trips side, working from the stick option route first, then bouncing to the flat, and finally checking the backside single receiver route if the underneath is clogged.
Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks to cover the stick route the flat is wide open, and if he jumps the flat you have the stick option sitting behind him. Cover 3 defenders with deep zone drops leave a soft spot underneath that the stick route exploits, especially if the linebacker to that side widens late or shows blitz pre-snap. Man coverage with underneath linebackers who have no help over the top gets beat when the stick option route breaks away from the defender's leverage, so identify man alignment by checking if defenders are turned and matched up rather than sitting in zone drops. Nano blitzes and inside linebacker blitzes can beat this play if the hot route protection is not adjusted, so check depth of the mike and will linebackers pre-snap and slide protection or check the backside route down if you see a heavy blitz look. Cover 2 with a hard-charging corner on the flat route can jump the quick throw, so if the corner sits low and inside pre-snap, be ready to go directly to the stick option instead of forcing the flat throw.
Fire zone and cover 3 shells struggle to defend the stick to flat combo because the flat defender has to choose between the flat and the option route breaking underneath, so target that conflict immediately after the snap.
Use the stick option route as a man beater against linebackers in coverage by breaking away from inside leverage, then hot route it to a speed out if you diagnose man coverage pre-snap.
Pair this play with PA Power Y Pop or PA Read in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect play action out of the same personnel and formation look before you come back to Stick on early downs.
This play is best used on second and short to medium or third and short since the stick route settles quickly and gives you a high floor completion versus blitz looks.
If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, expect more zone underneath and prioritize the stick to flat read, but if you see a single high safety rotate late, be ready to work the backside hitch against man coverage.
