Breakdown

619 Sail out of Shotgun Wing Trips WK is a classic sail concept built to attack zone coverage with a high low stretch on one side of the field while giving you a deep shot on the backside. The trips side runs a corner route, out, and flat combination that stretches cornerbacks and flat defenders vertically and horizontally, while the backside receiver typically works a deep dig or comeback as a man beater outlet. Primary progression starts with the deep corner route to see if the safety bites, then works down to the intermediate out, and finally checks down to the flat if the underneath defenders sink into the passing lanes.

Defensive Reads

Read the corner pre snap to see if he is playing off man or sitting in a zone drop, since off man alignment tells you the corner route has a chance to win outside. Key the safety rotation after the snap, if the deep safety rotates hard to the trips side sail concept, look backside immediately for the one on one matchup. Watch for user controlled defenders lurking underneath the out route, this is the most common way defenses shut down sail by sitting a linebacker or safety in the throwing lane. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender and deep third safety is the toughest shell to beat here, since it takes away both the flat and the corner simultaneously. Blitz packages that bring five or six rushers force you to speed up the progression, so recognize A gap or edge pressure pre snap and be ready to get the ball out early to the flat route.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and long or third and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4. Check the flat defender pre snap. If a linebacker or nickel is sitting shallow with no immediate blitz threat, the sail concept will stretch him and open the out route behind him. Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper crossing route against man coverage if you see man alignment on the trips side, since the natural sail concept is more effective against zone shells. Pair this play with Stick or Z Spot from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick horizontal stretch concepts and the deeper sail shot. Use PA Read or PA Power Y Pop earlier in a drive to get linebackers cheating up on run action, then come back to 619 Sail to hit the corner route over the top once safeties start creeping into the box.
