Breakdown

Outside Zone out of Shotgun Wing Slot Offset WK is a zone blocking run play built to get the HB moving laterally before he decides where to plant and cut. The offensive line flows in unison to the play side while the fullback or extra TE seals the edge, giving the runner a stretch look with cutback lanes if the defense over pursues. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read is the play side double team block at the point of attack followed by the backside cutback lane if defenders crash too hard down the line.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if they are sitting shallow and flowing hard to the play side aggressively, user a defender to spy the cutback lane. Identify if the defense is in a one high shell with safeties cheating toward the box, this signals run support and you should consider bouncing the run outside rather than working the natural cutback. Read the play side defensive end, if he crashes down hard to string the play out, this opens the cutback lane for a big gain. Man alignment corners pressing at the line usually means the safety help is committed to the pass, so an aggressive edge defender is the key blitz threat to account for on this run. Zone shells with linebackers staying square and reading the backfield are the toughest look for this play, since it kills the natural cutback rhythm and forces the runner into predictable lanes.

Usage Tips

Run this out of 12 personnel on early downs to keep defenses honest against your pass heavy calls like Fk Slant Out and Double Post from the same set.

Use your left analog stick patience presnap to identify if the defense is showing a light box, six or fewer defenders inside the tackles is a green light to call this immediately.

If the defense shows a stacked box or heavy blitz look, hot route the fullback or TE to a quick chip and cutback release to protect the edge.

Pair this with Bounce Inside Zone Lt and HB Draw in your play calling script so defenders cannot key on a single zone landmark or blocking direction.

On third and short or first and ten, this play forces linebackers to respect the run, which sets up Mtn PA Cross and Bounce PA Corner later in the drive for explosive shots off the same personnel.
