Breakdown

HB Slip Screen out of the Shotgun Wing Slot Offset WK set is a designed screen play built to punish aggressive pass rushers and blitz-heavy defenses. Your offensive line sets up a pass block for a beat before releasing to wall off defenders in front of the running back, while the HB slips out of the backfield to the flat or screen area for the catch. The primary read is simple: get the ball into the RB's hands as soon as he sits in the screen lane, then trust your blockers to spring him upfield, with the QB's eyes going directly to the HB on the snap rather than working through a traditional route progression.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify overloaded fronts or extra defenders showing blitz on one side, since HB Slip Screen thrives against five and six man pressure packages that vacate underneath zones. Watch for a spy or a linebacker who stays home instead of rushing, since a disciplined spy can read the screen developing and beat your blockers to the RB before he turns upfield. If the user controls a defensive lineman and immediately drops into a shallow zone or lurks near the screen lane, that is a sign the defense is jumping the play, so avoid this call on the next snap. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with linebackers reading run/pass keys are vulnerable here, since their zone drops open natural lanes for blockers to seal. Man coverage with press corners and no blitz shuts this down quickly, since defenders in phase can crash downhill without had to respect a deep route, collapsing the screen before it develops.

Usage Tips

Call this play when you see pre-snap indicators of blitz, such as linebackers creeping to the line or safeties rotating down into the box, since the delayed rush gives your blockers time to get out in front.

Use HB Slip Screen as a changeup after running Bounce Inside Zone Lt or Outside Zone a few times, since defenders keying run fits or crashing downhill on inside zone action will overrun the screen and get walled off easily.

Avoid calling this against disciplined zone defenses that keep linebackers at home, since sitting defenders can read the screen fast and blow it up before blockers get set.

If the defense shows man coverage with no blitz, consider audibling to Fk Slant Out or Slant Stick instead, since man coverage with a clean pocket gives your blockers less advantage and removes the leverage this screen depends on.

Best used on early downs (1st or 2nd and medium) to keep defenses honest and slow down disguised pressure packages, and pair it in a sequence with HB Draw to condition the defense to respect both the delayed give and the screen look.
