Double Smash pairs two smash concepts on both sides of the formation out of Shotgun 12 personnel, stacking a corner route over a flat or hitch on each side to attack the boundary and create a high low read on the cornerback. This is a classic man and zone beater, since the corner route clears out the deep zone while the underneath route sits in the void, forcing a defender to choose between the two. The primary read progression starts with the corner route to the flanker or slot receiver, and if that window is tight, you work down to the underneath flat or hitch route on the same side before checking the backside smash concept.
Watch the flat defender post snap, if he sinks with the underneath route the corner route behind him should be wide open in Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells. Key the safety rotation at the snap, a two high shell that rotates down to one high signals Cover 3 buzz which can undercut the corner route if you do not throw with anticipation. Against man coverage, look for a user controlled defender jumping the underneath route, this leaves the corner route on an island versus a cornerback with no safety help over the top. Beware of Cover 2 with aggressive corner jams, this can disrupt route timing on both smash concepts and delay your first read, so be ready to reset to the backside if the primary side gets clogged. This play struggles against a hard Cover 4 quarters shell with disciplined corners sitting on the corner route, in that situation check down to the underneath flat route quickly before the pocket collapses.
Identify the cornerback depth pre snap, if he is playing off coverage the corner route will have a tighter window so lean toward the underneath route first.
Against Cover 2 shells, throw the corner route with anticipation before the safety can rotate over the top, this is where Double Smash punishes a lazy flat footed safety.
Use the flick to motion or send a receiver in short motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation it confirms man coverage and you can trust the corner route win versus a trail defender.
On third and medium situations, this play is excellent because both smash concepts give you a built in sideline access throw underneath while still threatening the deep corner shot.
Pair this play with Smash or Slant Stick from the same set to keep the defense guessing between a true smash concept and a quick game answer, then mix in HB Draw or Inside Zone to hold linebackers and prevent zone drops from getting deep enough to squeeze the corner window.
