Mtn Mesh Traffic is a mesh-based man beater out of Shotgun 12 personnel that puts two crossing routes at shallow depth to create natural traffic and rub off man defenders. The two tight ends work the mesh point underneath while the outside receivers push vertical or run intermediate breakers to hold the safeties and stress a two-high shell. Primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers working man to man leverage, then climbs to the deep shot if the coverage bites down on the underneath traffic.
Identify press man coverage pre-snap on the outside receivers, this is your green light that the mesh crossers will get separation. Watch for a single high safety rotating late, which signals man coverage underneath and confirms the mesh read is live. Post-snap, track any user-controlled linebacker or safety sitting in a lurk position over the middle, since they can jump the shallow crossers and undercut the mesh point. Against zone shells with two deep safeties and linebackers sitting in short zones, the mesh traffic gets clogged, so be ready to check to a vertical shot route instead. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with linebackers dropping to intermediate zones, abandon the underneath read and look to the deep route working behind the mesh distraction.
Check pre-snap for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on the outside receivers, since mesh concepts thrive against man and lose value against soft zone drops.
Use motion or a quick shift to identify if linebackers are locked in man, then key the mesh crossers immediately at the snap for a rub against blitzing linebackers or nickel defenders.
Hot route the backside TE into a shallow drag if you see a heavy blitz look, giving yourself an emergency outlet against nano blitz pressure.
Best called on second and medium to third and long when defenses are more likely to play man coverage or send extra rushers.
