If the defense shows an overloaded front with extra numbers in the box pre-snap, this play loses value since both the dive and keep lanes get clogged. Post-snap, track whether the backside end stays home or squeezes down, hesitation from that defender means the offense should have already handed the ball off before the read resolves. User-controlled defenders flying downhill on the mesh point are the biggest threat, since a good user can blow up both options if the offense telegraphs the keep too early.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or short yardage when you see a light box with six or fewer defenders in the run fit.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing man or zone coverage on the two receivers, since a soft shell with deep safeties signals extra numbers in the box are unlikely.
Key the backside defensive end alignment before the snap, if he is crashing hard on run plays in tendencies, this play punishes that with the QB keeper.
Pair this with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble in the same set to keep defenders honest on the perimeter and force conflict on unblocked defenders.
