Breakdown

HB Toss Fk Jet is a run play out of the Shotgun U Off Trips Wk formation that pairs a jet sweep fake motion with a toss action to the HB going the opposite direction. The fake jet motion pulls flow from linebackers and second level defenders, opening a lane for the toss to bounce outside as the offensive line reach blocks and the playside tackle and TE seal the edge. This is a run play designed to attack overplayed run fits and outrun pursuit angles, so your primary read progression is the edge defender and flowing linebackers, not a route concept.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the linebacker depth and alignment, since defenses that stack the box or crash hard toward jet motion are exactly what this play is designed to punish. Look for the safety rotation before the snap, if both safeties are deep in a two high shell the edge should be softer and the toss has more room to bounce outside. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker, if they stay disciplined and hold the edge instead of chasing the jet fake, the toss gets strung out and loses value. Watch for a user controlled defender flying downhill immediately off the snap, that usually signals the defense is selling out on the run and either a cutback or an audibled pass concept becomes the better answer. Against a five or six man box with the strong safety cheating down, this run is live, but against a true eight man box with linebackers reading the mesh point instead of biting on motion, this play gets shut down quickly.

Usage Tips

Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait aggressive defenders into flowing hard with the fake, then let the toss action work the other way once you see linebackers cheat toward the motion side.

This play hits hardest against defenses that key run flow off jet motion or that show heavy box counts expecting inside zone, so mix it in after running Inside Zone or Same Side Zone to condition the defense to bite on motion.

Stick to early down and distance calls like first and ten or second and short since the toss needs space and a defense not sitting in a pass shell.

If the defense shows edge contain with a fast flowing linebacker or a spy, cut the play dead with a hard user commit block on the first defender to cross the tackle box and trust your blockers to seal the alley.

Pair this with Fk Jet Toss Pass out of the same set to keep defenses honest, since the run action and pass action look identical out of the gate and force linebackers to hesitate on their fits.
