Outside Zone out of U Off Trips Wk in Shotgun is a pure zone run play designed to get the HB working laterally before finding a crease. The offensive line flows in unison to the play side with the front five reaching and climbing to their zone landmarks, while the two inline TEs to the trips side stay in as blockers to seal the edge. This is a zone run scheme built to beat overaggressive gap fill defenses and light boxes, with the primary read being the playside cutback lane created by the OL's zone steps, from the edge blockers inside toward the frontside gaps.
Watch for the play side linebacker's depth at the snap, if he is sitting shallow he can blow up the zone stretch before it develops. Check corner alignment on the trips side, press man corners often signal man coverage rotation that opens cutback lanes away from the call side. Identify safety rotation post snap, a single high safety cheating to the run strength usually means the defense is selling out on the box and the cutback is there. Look for edge defenders crashing hard down the line pre snap, that is a strong indicator of a run blitz that outside zone can gash if the TE seals him or the HB bounces outside. Beware defenses that spam inside run blitzes or 46 style fronts with extra defenders crashing the frontside gap, as this can beat the zone scheme before blockers reach their landmarks.
Check the box count pre snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for the best odds of a clean lane.
Use the trips side alignment to bait the defense into rolling coverage away from the run strength, then attack the vacated edge.
Hot route the backside TE into a stalk or cut block if you see edge pressure showing blitz off that side.
Pair this with Same Side Zone and Inside Zone from the same set so defenses cannot key blocking flow direction based on formation tendencies.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to keep the defense honest and set up play action shots like PA Boot or PA Crossers later in the series.
