Breakdown

Dagger Sit is a trips-based dropback pass concept out of Shotgun U Off Trips Wk. From the trips side, the outer receiver runs a deep vertical to clear coverage while the middle slot runs the classic dagger dig underneath it, and the inner slot sits down in the shallow hole for a quick outlet. On the backside, the isolated receiver runs a comeback that breaks back toward the sideline. The offensive line holds up in a standard pass protection shell while the QB reads the field side dagger combo first, working from the clear-out vertical down to the dig, with the sit route and backside comeback as underneath and backside bailout options. This concept is built to attack both zone drops with the dig sitting behind linebackers and man coverage with the vertical stretching cornerbacks deep.

Defensive Reads

Check the safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties split evenly signals Cover 2 and tells you the dig should sit in the window between the corner and safety. Watch the depth of the underneath linebackers at the snap, if they drop deep to wall off the dig, look immediately to the sit route in the shallow zone for an easy completion. Man coverage with the corner running vertically with your outside receiver opens up the dig route working across the field, especially if there is no deep middle safety help. Beware of a sim pressure or nano blitz off the edge, since the sit route often needs an extra half second to develop, quick pressure can force the QB off his first read. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard flat defender crashing the sit route, the QB needs to climb the progression to the dig or the backside comeback instead of forcing the checkdown.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and long or third and medium situations where the dig route has room to settle in the soft spot behind the linebackers and in front of the safeties.

Presnap, identify if the corner over the vertical route is playing off or press: off coverage favors the vertical clearing space for the dig, press man means the dig sitting route becomes your first read against a jam.

Against zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 3, key the flow of the underneath linebackers, if they widen with the sit route the dig will come open behind them in the middle void.

Hot route the backside comeback into a quick out or slant if you see man coverage with no safety help, this gives you a fast underneath answer versus blitz looks.

Pair this play with Levels Out or Mtn Stick in your call sheet so the defense has to respect both the deep dig window and quick underneath combos, keeping linebackers honest and unable to jump the sit route.
