Mtn Stick out of Shotgun U Off Trips Wk lines up with a trips side to the left and a single receiver plus a wing tight end to the right. The trips side runs a classic stick concept: the inside receiver sits down on a stick route, the middle receiver runs a deep vertical clear-out, and the outside receiver runs a deep crossing route to the opposite hash, stretching the underneath zone horizontally while clearing space for the stick sitter. To the right, the single receiver and wing run a corner-out combo, with the wing releasing outside and up while the outside man breaks inside then climbs vertically, forming a natural man beater against press or off coverage on the boundary. The primary read starts with the stick route underneath if the flat defender bites on the crossing route or widens with the vertical, then progresses to the corner-out combo on the closed side if the trips concept is covered.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep safeties aligned over the trips side, since the stick concept is designed to exploit the flat defender's conflict between the crossing route and the stick sitter. Watch the flat or curl-hook defender at the snap: if he widens to cover the deep crosser, jump the throwing lane to the stick route for a quick underneath completion. Man coverage with a single high safety is vulnerable to the corner-out combo on the boundary side, since the wing's release naturally picks off a trailing man defender. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the stick window or lurking underneath the trips concept, as this is the primary defensive counter that can bait a turnover if the quarterback locks onto the stick route too early. A hard blitz off the edge or interior pressure package can collapse the pocket before the second read on the corner-out combo develops, so check protection numbers and consider a hot route or check down if you see more rushers than blockers.
Use this on early downs or third and short to medium since the stick route provides a quick, high-percentage completion against soft cushions.
Motion pre-snap to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man it confirms man coverage and you should hot route the stick runner to sit deeper against a linebacker.
If the defense shows a two-high shell, prioritize the deep crossing route on the trips side since it will cross into open grass vacated by rotating safeties.
Pair this play with Mtn Verticals or PA Boot Corner-Post in your call sheet to keep defenders honest, since Mtn Stick punishes aggressive underneath zone drops while the verticals punish the same look if defenders sit too shallow.
Against man coverage, key the boundary side corner-out combo since the pick-style release from the wing tight end creates natural rub separation for the outside receiver.
