Breakdown

Mtn Fade Smash aligns out of Shotgun Trips Wk with a solo receiver to the boundary running a vertical fade up the sideline for a one-on-one shot, while the trips side runs the classic smash combo: the outside receiver runs a quick corner route and the inside slot clears out on a deep crossing route toward the opposite hash. The running back releases out of the backfield on a flat route to the trips side, giving the smash concept a true high-low read against the corner. This is a man beater and Cover 2 beater in one call, since the backside fade isolates a corner on an island while the smash side stretches the flat-to-corner defender vertically and horizontally. The primary read progression starts backside with the fade if you get a favorable one-on-one look, then works to the smash side flat-to-corner high-low read.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the backside corner is in press or off man, press coverage with no deep safety help is the green light to fire the fade immediately. Watch the flat defender to the trips side, if he sinks to cover the running back's flat route, the corner route behind him should be uncontested for a quick pitch and catch. Against Cover 3 or single high safety looks, the deep half rotation can erase the fade window, so be ready to progress quickly to the smash side high-low read. Man coverage with underneath linebackers matched to the running back's flat route opens throwing lanes for the corner route sitting behind them, key the linebacker's eyes and depth after the snap. Zone blitz or Cover 2 disguises that roll a safety down late can jump the corner route, so use pump fakes or eye manipulation to hold that flat-to-corner defender before committing to the throw.

Usage Tips

Check the backside cornerback pre-snap, if he is playing off with no safety help over the top, the fade is your first read and should be thrown on time with a back shoulder placement.

Use the motion (if available in this variation) to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation you have a clean man beater on the backside fade.

Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, work the smash concept second, the corner route on the outside receiver will sit down in the honey hole between the flat defender and the deep half safety.

This play pairs well with Mtn Verticals and Mtn Stick in the same set, running them from identical formation and personnel disguises your intentions and keeps defenses honest on both levels of the field.

Best used on first and second down in the red zone or in three-step throw windows where the fade shot play is live but you still have the smash concept as a built-in checkdown against zone drops.
