Defensive Reads

Watch safety depth before the snap: two deep safeties usually means a zone shell where the crossers can settle into soft spots, while a single high safety often signals man coverage or Cover 3 where the rub routes create natural separation. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop: if he bites hard on the play-action and sprints downhill, the deep crosser will be wide open behind him. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow drag lane or spying the crossing routes, since that lurk threat can jump the underneath crosser and bait a turnover if you force the throw early. Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or second and medium when defenses are more likely to respect the play-action fake and bite on the run action.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if they are stacked tight to the box expecting run, the crossers will have soft coverage underneath and the play-action will hold them even longer.
Hot route the backside drag into a deeper option or spot him if you see a robber defender sitting in the middle read zone, since that low crosser is the first thing a user lurking safety will jump.
Pair this call with Inside Zone or HB Power from the same set earlier in a series so the defense keys run fits, making the PA Crossers fake far more effective when you actually call it.
Against zone shells, prioritize the deep crosser sitting in the void between the linebacker level and safety zone rather than forcing the ball into traffic on the shallow drag.
If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 pre-snap, look to hit the corner-breaking route on trips as a home run shot before working the crossers underneath.
