Breakdown

Speed Option out of Shotgun Trips TE Offset is a pure zone read run play designed to attack the edge with the QB and HB working in tandem. The diagram shows the HB aligned next to the QB flowing outside with him as the QB reads the edge defender, pitching the ball or keeping based on that defender's leverage. This is not a pass concept at all, so there are no route combos to beat man or zone coverage, it is a numbers and leverage run play that lives or dies on the option read at the point of attack. Primary read progression is simply the edge defender: option him with a keep if he crashes on the HB, pitch it outside if he stays home on the QB.

Defensive Reads

Key the edge defender assigned to the option side before the snap: if he is playing wide contain with outside leverage, he is designed to take away the pitch, so the QB should plan to keep. If linebackers are stacked tight and flowing hard downhill on snap, that tells you the defense is selling out to stop the QB keep, so look to option off and get the ball to the HB quickly. Watch for a user controlled defender crashing the mesh point, since that is the classic way human defenders shut this play down by taking away both options at once. Defenses in a 4-3 under or over front with an aggressive Sam linebacker crashing hard usually win against this play if the QB is slow to read and pitch. Zone shells with safeties rotating down into the box also load up the edge and take away cutback lanes, making this play far less effective against two deep safety looks with heavy run support.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or short yardage situations where defenses expect pass out of Trips formations, since the alignment disguises the run intent well. Pre-snap, check the box count and force defender depth: if the defender assigned to the option keys is sitting wide and squared up, expect him to crash down, so plan to pull the ball and keep with the QB. If that same defender is hanging back or shuffling laterally, plan to pitch to the HB for the edge. Pair this play with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the perimeter option and quick game, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits. Against aggressive user defenders flying downhill on motion or snap recognition, the pitch read becomes automatic since they will overcommit inside. Save this for user defenses that load the box on early downs, since Speed Option punishes overpursuit and outside contain busts.
