Inside Zone out of Shotgun Trips TE Offset is a pure zone run play built to attack downhill with a one-cut zone blocking scheme up front. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, reading the defensive front to determine whether the RB should bend the run back or hit the natural crease between the tackles. With trips receivers to one side and a lone TE offset in protection, this is a run play designed to hold the defense with numbers and gaps rather than a man or zone beater through the air, and there is no play-action or RPO route tag attached to this specific call. The primary read progression starts with the play side double team at the point of attack, then works to the backside linebacker fit before the RB decides to press the hole or cut back against overpursuit.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for stacked boxes with eight or more defenders near the line, since that alignment kills the natural cutback lanes this scheme relies on. Watch safety depth and rotation before the snap, if a safety cheats down into the box the cutback lane will be tighter and the RB needs to press it hard and fast. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard with the zone action the backside cutback opens up immediately. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the mesh point or crashing down early, this run beats slow-reacting linebackers but gets erased by a disciplined mike linebacker sitting in his run fit. Blitz packages that send extra defenders through the play side gap can blow this up before the line can climb to the second level, so avoid calling this into obvious run blitz looks or heavy stacked fronts.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit. Use the trips side to bait the safety out of the run fit with a quick pre-snap motion or a hot route glance, then snap it before the defense can rotate back into the box. Pair this with RPO Alert Bubble and RPO Zone Alert Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and the quick bubble screen out of trips, keeping linebackers honest. Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play-action shots later in the series. Against aggressive user linebackers who crash downhill on the snap, let the RB press the line longer than usual and cut off the backside for a home run angle.
