PA Crossers is a play-action passing concept out of Shotgun Trips TE Offset that uses a play fake to hold the linebackers before working two deep crossing routes from the trips side against a shallow crosser and a flat route from the offset TE. The two outside receivers from the trips bunch break into deep crossers that stretch the field horizontally at different depths, while the inner slot runs a shorter crosser underneath, and the TE releases into the flat as a checkdown or man beater against overaggressive linebackers. This is primarily a man beater concept designed to create natural rub traffic and separation through crossing angles, with the primary read progression starting on the deepest crosser, working down to the intermediate crosser, and finishing with the flat route on the TE.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the play fake it opens up the deep crosser for an explosive gain. Identify man coverage pre-snap by checking if defenders are aligned tight to the trips receivers, this concept thrives against man due to natural crossing traffic. Key on the flat defender assigned to the TE, if he sits and reads the quarterback instead of covering the flat, expect a quick underneath completion. Cover 3 with a fast flowing linebacker to the crossers can undercut the shallow route, so be ready to climb the pocket if the underneath crosser is taken away. Beware of a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, this is the primary threat that can jump the intermediate crosser and turn it into a turnover.

Usage Tips

Sell the play fake by holding the ball for a beat before your first read to bait linebackers into run fits, this widens throwing lanes on the crossers.

Use this against man coverage shells where you can identify press or man alignment on the trips receivers pre-snap, the natural picks and rubs from the crossing routes create easy separation.

If you see a single high safety or Cover 3 shell, work the deep crosser first since it will cross the zone hole faster than underneath defenders can react.

Hot route the flat route TE into a quick out or speed out if you are facing a hard flat defender who jumps the route immediately at the snap.

Pair this play with Curl Combo or Levels Sail from the same set to keep the defense guessing between crossing concepts and sail combos, forcing linebackers to hesitate on run fits.
