PA Crossers is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Trips TE Offset that sends two deep crossers from the trips side working opposite directions to clear out the middle of the field, with a third receiver running a deep in-cut behind them and the backside receiver working a shallow out to the flat. The play-action fake holds linebackers for a beat, opening throwing lanes for the crossers against man coverage while the staggered depth of the routes gives you answers versus zone drops as well. Primary read progression starts with the deep crosser breaking away from trips (the far route) working to the near crosser, then down to the in-cut route, with the flat route as your checkdown versus pressure or if the crossers are covered.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, which signals zone coverage and tells you the crossers should have room to work underneath as they cross the field. If you see man coverage with defenders lined up tight on the trips receivers, expect the crossers to get picked or rerouted at the line, so be ready to check down to the flat route quickly. Key on linebacker depth after the snap: if linebackers bite hard on the play-action fake and drop late, the in-cut and near crosser will be wide open in the intermediate middle. Beware of Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle, since that defender can undercut the near crosser or in-cut route if the quarterback stares it down. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are the biggest threat to this play since the deep-developing crossers take too long to come open against a fast four or five man rush, so recognize blitz indicators pre-snap and be ready to hot route protection or check to the flat.
Usage Tips
Sell the play-action fake by holding the snap button long enough to freeze linebackers before dropping into your progression. Use this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to bite on the run fake, since the play develops slowly and you need time for the crossers to clear traffic. Pre-snap, check safety depth: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, target the near crosser and in-cut route since the middle should be softer against zone coverage. If the defense shows man coverage with linebackers walked up, hot route your flat route into a quick out or speed out to give yourself a faster outlet against blitz looks.
