Breakdown

Flood is a three level route concept run from Trips TE Offset out of Shotgun that overloads one side of the field to attack Cover 3 and other zone shells. The trips side runs a vertical clear out from the outside receiver, a deep out from the middle receiver, and a flat route from the inside slot receiver, while the offset TE releases into a corner route from the backside to give the QB a two way go. The backside also shows a red blocking indicator on the TE aligned tight, suggesting a chip or stalk block before the route breaks off, giving the play a built in half slide protection look. Primary read progression goes flat to deep out to corner, working low to high on the trips side before working backside to the TE if the underneath defenders sink too far.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap since Flood is designed to put him in conflict between the flat route and the deep out breaking over his zone. Check the deep third or deep half safety alignment before the snap, if the safety is shaded to the trips side he can rob the deep out or corner route and force a checkdown. Key on the middle linebacker's drop, a shallow zone drop leaves the deep out and corner window open, while a deep drop or spy call chokes off the intermediate routes. Cover 3 with a sky safety rotating late is the biggest vulnerability since the flat to out combo overloads the boundary defender, but Cover 4 or a two high shell with disciplined corners can sit on the out and take it away. Beware of user controlled defenders lurking in the shallow flat or jumping the deep out route, since a heads up user can bait the QB into a turnover on this concept.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium or third and long when you expect a zone shell since the flood concept is built to stress a single defender in the deep third or curl to flat zone. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 4 by checking safety depth and corner alignment on the trips side, since two high shells with sticky corners can take away the deep out. If you see man coverage or a nano blitz coming off the edge, hot route the flat receiver into a quick option or slide the TE into a check release to buy the QB time. Pair this play with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble earlier in a series so the defense respects the quick game before you hit them with the deeper out and corner combo. Against aggressive linebackers who jump underneath routes, look to the corner route from the TE as your first read instead of working low to high.
