Shock H Option is a Shotgun Trips TE Offset pass play built off a three-receiver trips side and an isolated H-back or TE running an option route into the flat. Off the trips numbers, the two outside receivers run vertical clear-outs (a deep dig and a wheel/go combo) to occupy the corners and safety, while the slot runs a short seam/flat route to hold linebackers. On the backside, the isolated receiver runs a sit and go, breaking outside and up the numbers to attack a cornerback playing off or bailing deep. The primary read starts with the option route out of the backfield or inline slot against man leverage (settle vs off coverage, break vs press), then progresses to the backside sit-and-go if the defender bites on the shorter route, making this both a man beater on the option and a zone beater if the flat defender widens.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat or curl defender at the snap: if they widen with the option route, the backside sit-and-go window opens against single-high shells. Key the cornerback over the isolated backside receiver pre-snap. Soft corners or those bailing into deep zones are the biggest tell to take the go route. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4, the option route sits down in the honey hole between the flat and hook defenders, so user linebackers need to stay disciplined and not overcommit to the trips side. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the option route is the play's biggest weakness for the defense since the option runner should win with a settle or break based on leverage. Disguised blitzes off the edge on the backside can beat this play quickly since protection is stretched thin with three receivers releasing to the trips side.
Usage Tips
Check the flat defender pre-snap to decide the option route break: settle into a hook against off man or zone, push vertical against press man.
Use motion out of Trips TE Offset to identify man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man confirms man coverage and green-lights the option route as your first read.
Take a shot on the backside sit-and-go against corners playing soft or bailing at the snap, especially on early downs when defenses expect run out of this personnel.
Pair this play with Speed Option or Inside Zone from the same set to keep linebackers honest, then come back to Shock H Option once they start flowing hard to the run action.
Best used on second and medium to long distance where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells, giving the option route room to settle in the soft spot.
