Mtn Bunch Drive is a Cover 4 beater run from a bunch alignment out of Shotgun Tight Flex Wk, tagged with pre-snap motion to help identify man versus zone coverage. Off the bunch, the diagram shows two drive routes working underneath, one runner cutting hard to the shallow crossing route while the other sits on a quick out breaking to the sideline, creating a natural pick and rub combo against tight man coverage. Two vertical routes stretch the field on the outside and up the seam to hold the safeties, while the backfield release adds a checkdown option underneath. The primary read starts with the shallow drive crosser working from bunch, then works out to the flat/out route, and finally climbs to the vertical seam if the underneath drive routes get taken away by a zone drop.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing since two deep safeties split wide signal Cover 4 or Cover 2, which is exactly what the drive concept is designed to exploit underneath. Watch the cornerback aligned over the bunch, if he presses at the line expect man coverage and prioritize the rub action to spring the crosser open immediately. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep to cover the vertical seam route the shallow drive crosser will have a wide open throwing lane. Beware of a user-controlled defender sitting in a shallow zone or lurking the crossing route, since a quarters shell with an aggressive underneath defender can jump the drive route and create a turnover. This concept struggles against a hard Cover 3 buzz where the flat defender squats on the out route, so be ready to climb the progression to the vertical seam route if that flat zone is taken away.
Use the pre-snap motion to bait linebackers and identify if the defense is playing man or zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man confirms man coverage. Against Cover 4 look immediately to the shallow drive route working across the formation, since this concept is specifically built to attack the seams and flat zones that quarter coverage leaves open underneath. If the corner presses the bunch, hot route the outside drive runner into a quick out to beat the jam and get an easy completion in the flat. Pair this play with Mtn Bunch Whip Smash or Mtn Y Cross in your call sheet so the defense cannot sit on the same crossing concept every snap. This play works best on early downs or third and short to medium since the underneath routes convert quickly, but the vertical routes give you a home run shot if the safeties bite on the drive action.
