Split Wing Nasty is the heavy personnel outlier inside Shotgun. Where most Shotgun sets stretch the field with three and four receiver looks, this one runs 22 personnel: two backs and two tight ends, with the wings split off the formation edges in a nasty (tight) alignment. That compression means you are almost never facing a true nickel or dime shell. Defenses have to answer with base personnel or eat a run fit disadvantage, and once they load the box you have two eligible blockers who can also release into the flat and seam without any substitution tell.
Live in this set on second and short, third and short, and inside the red zone, where the defense must respect the run and cannot substitute into pass personnel
Use the motion on Motion Power O and Motion Read Option purely as a diagnostic tool; if the defender follows across the formation you have man and should check to Mtn PA Y-Cross or Motion PA Mesh
Hot route the backside wing to a drag or slant against press man to create a rub off the compressed alignment, then user catch through the traffic
Against single-high shells with a spilling edge, run Mtn Read Lead Option and read the unblocked defender; if he takes the back, pull and get vertical up the numbers
Set your protection with a slide toward the pressure side and keep one back in on Mtn PA Slide when you suspect a nano blitz, since the roll and the flat release become your escape valve
Mix straight Motion Power O runs early in the game so the play-action concepts sell later; the linebacker trigger is what makes Y-Cross open
