Breakdown

Motion Power O out of Shotgun Split Wing Nasty is a gap scheme run play built on the classic power O concept, using pre-snap motion to shift numbers and get a hat on the edge before the snap. The diagram shows the offensive line pulling the backside guard across the formation while the play side double teams down at the point of attack, with the fullback and lead blocker climbing through the hole to kick out the edge defender. This is a downhill run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the pulling guard's kick out block, hitting the hole off his hip or bending it back if the linebacker flows too fast.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap, since a wide alignment invites the kick out block while a tight crash alignment can spill the run back inside. Check the linebacker depth at the snap, fast flowing linebackers who overrun the play create a natural cutback lane behind the pulling guard. This run gets shut down by disciplined gap sound defenses that keep their edge defender squeezed and their linebackers reading through the pulling guard instead of biting on motion. Look for a user controlled defender flying downhill immediately after motion, that is a sign the defense is jumping the play and a cutback or bounce outside can hit big. Safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap signal a run blitz call, which favors the offense if the fullback can seal the extra defender on the kick out.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing base personnel or shifting to match strength, since a lazy defensive adjustment to motion often means a blown fit on the play side.

Look for light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box before motioning, this play thrives against nickel or dime personnel that cannot match power run fits.

Hot route the fullback or lead blocker only if you see an overload blitz coming off the edge, otherwise trust the naked kick out block against the play side defensive end.

Pair this with Mtn Read Lead Option and Motion Read Option from the same set so the defense has to respect both gap power and zone read looks off identical motion and formation.

Best called on second and short or first and ten to establish the run, then come back to Mtn PA Slide or Motion PA Mesh off the same look once the defense starts crashing down.
